DBA Survivor

imageDBA Survivor: Become a Rock Star DBA is an introductory psuedo-technical book which takes a look at some of the things you will need to look for when you are becoming a DBA. It tackles such things as what to do on the first day (or days) of the job, what you can expect from production support issues, a few tools that might help with that support, eating right, exercising, networking, training and most important of all communication.

Although most of the information is common sense, it is apparent that common sense sometimes isn’t that common and I would still recommend this book, or at least a book like this, to someone new to the role of DBA or aspiring to that role.  It is very useful to capture the little things that people are just assumed to know that they should be doing.  Best of all it is a quick and easy read with a light tone.  And, beyond that, Thomas LaRock is an all around great guy and pillar of the SQL Community.

Anther book in the same vein would be Brad McGehee’s How to become an exceptional DBA. {free e-book}

I read this book in March 2011.
