I have been asked a few times if there was a landing page for the 70-451 posts and figured that such a page would probably be more helpful than just the tags post.  So, without further ado, here is the listing:

  • Identify the appropriate usage of new data types.
    This objective may include but is not limited to: geography, geometry, hierarchyid, date, time, datetime2, datetimeoffset, varbinary (max) filestream
  • Design tables.
    This objective may include but is not limited to: table width, sizing data types, IN_ROW_DATA (BLOBs), overflow data, sparse columns, computed columns, persisted computed columns
  • Design data integrity.
    This objective may include but is not limited to: primary key, foreign key, check constraint, default constraint, NULL/NOT NULL, unique constraint, DML triggers

Designing Programming Objects (17 percent)

Designing a Transaction and Concurrency Strategy (14 percent)

Designing an XML Strategy (8 percent)

Designing Queries for Performance (17 percent)

  • Optimize and tune queries.
    This objective may include but is not limited to: optimizer hints, common table expressions (CTEs), search conditions, temporary storage, GROUP BY [GROUPING SETS|CUBE|ROLLUP]
  • Analyze execution plans.
    This objective may include but is not limited to: execution order, logical and physical operators, join operators, minimize resource costs, compare query costs
  • Evaluate the use of row-based operations vs. set-based operations.
    This objective may include but is not limited to: row-based logic vs. set-based logic, batching, splitting implicit transactions

Designing a Database for Optimal Performance (15 percent)

    I’ve just started studying for the 70-451 test, and this resource is just a huge help. I particularly appreciate the links to BOL for each of the subjects, which make it easy to learn as much or as little about each subject as I could possibly want. I have a feeling I’m going to be referencing this page very often until I take the test. Thanks!

    This is a good collection of study material, Eric. I just started my prep and as Tim mentioned above, I will probably be visiting this site quite frequently too! Thanks for all your effort of bringing this together, it saves a ton of time! I do wish there were some exam specific guides though, like the ones available for MCTS. Again, thank you.
